LAUREL, MD - The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) announced today that it has granted its first ultrasound practice accreditation in dedicated thyroid/parathyroid ultrasound to the endocrinology practice of Michelle Zaniewski-Singh, MD, in Houston, Texas. AIUM practice accreditation in thyroid/parathyroid ultrasound ensures excellence in the quality of diagnostic ultrasound examinations and ultrasound-guided invasive procedures of the thyroid and parathyroid glands.

The AIUM began accepting accreditation applications for the dedicated thyroid/parathyroid specialty in February 2009 after extensive collaboration with the American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists (AACE).

“I feel honored that my practice is the first to be accredited by the AIUM for thyroid and parathyroid ultrasonography,” says Dr Zaniewski-Singh. “Ultrasound has become such an important part of endocrinology. I am proud to show my patients and the entire medical community that I am offering top-of-the-line care in my practice.”

AIUM ultrasound practice accreditation is a peer review process that examines practices against nationally recognized standards of excellence in training and qualifications of personnel, quality of ultrasound examinations, maintenance and calibration of machines, quality of reports, implementation of protection policies, and regular quality assurance activities. The AIUM recognizes the AACE-affiliated American College of Endocrinology’s certification process, Endocrine Certification in Neck Ultrasound (ECNU), as evidence of sufficient physician training in thyroid/parathyroid ultrasound.

A growing number of insurers have made practice accreditation a privileging requirement for physicians to be reimbursed for diagnostic imaging.

Ultrasound imaging is used in endocrinology to examine the thyroid and parathyroid glands, stage thyroid cancer, and guide thyroid and lymph node biopsies and interventional procedures.

Dr Zaniewski-Singh’s practice specializes in clinical thyroidology, endocrine research, laser medicine, and comprehensive endocrine care.

The American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine (AIUM) is a multidisciplinary association dedicated to advancing the safe and effective use of ultrasound in medicine through professional and public education, research, development of guidelines, and accreditation.
